Professional Party Planning

Wednesday 9 April 2008 @ 6:16 am

Party Planning isn’t something you think of when you decide to host a the bash to end all bashes. All you can think of is out doing the last one you held or some-one else’s party. You want to impress and leave a lasting impression on the guests, your piers, the world! But planning the perfect party is a lot harder than you may expect. The attention to detail required to keep your reputation in order takes a lot of time and energy. Energy you may have, but quite often the time you can afford to spend to be the talk of the town is limited. This is why a lot of the big parties in today’s world are often planned by professional party planners.

Party Planners offer an expert yet affordable service. They know exactly what works and what doesn’t. Your ideas, whilst fantastic in conception, may fall flat. A party planner has a much better idea of what is achievable which gives them a huge advantage when it comes to planning an event. They could be the difference between the success and failure of the night and if its a corporate event, the success of the night is essential.

The party planner can cater for all your needs. They don’t normally work to a “set” package. They believe your party should be how you want it and will listen to your ideas before making suggestions working either to a fixed budget or costing your requirement to produce an event tailored for you and your guests. No task is too big or too small, whether you need celebrity event planning or a birthday party for a friend or family. Have you ever wanted to host a theme night? You can select from a vast range of ideas to make your each of your parties unique.  Most good party planners will have  a warehouse full of props, costumes and other equipment you can choose from. Some of the most popular themes for partys  include James Bond, Black and White, Wild West and many more. How about Las Vegas casino nights, a sure fire way to really impress your guests.

Finding the right company to plan and host your party is very important.  The biggest and most common  mistake people make is in the time that is needed to plan a party. You are advised to plan as far ahead as possible so that you allow enough time for you and your party organisers to arrange every detail. You would hate to have to rush certain parts because you didn’t allow enough time, splitting the responsibilities with a professional party planner allows you to sit back and relax knowing that everything will be perfect.

Its also a good idea to ask for references when choosing your party planner. Take a look at their website to find out more information on who they are and how they operate. While you on the website, be sure to check out their feedback, you can read testimonials from past customers. That way you can be confident in your decision and concentrate on other factors of your party.

Auctions In Spain - Your Local E-Bay Store

Wednesday 2 April 2008 @ 6:10 am

I spend…well lets just say that I spend way too much time in front of this computer screen. Everything from forums to e-bay passes by me every day. Its my own fault, I am always looking out for the next big thing and monitoring what is in and what is out. i recently got back into the auction rooms at e-bay or should I say my wife recently got me back involved. There is a trick to bidding on the auction sites and even though I’ve told how it works, it is usually left up to me to do her bidding….that’s marriage for you!

Being based in Spain for parts of the year, I thought it would be good to see how the Spanish or the English in Spain were getting on with e-bay and similar sites. I found an online auction site in Spain called sell it on the coast that has recently started up. I joined up and had a browse to see how it performed and was surprisingly impressed. Its working off quick servers and I found no glitches. If your an ex-pat looking to get your e-bay fix a little closer to home then check it out.

Harley Davidson & The Movies - Fifty Years Of Movie Parts

Tuesday 1 April 2008 @ 8:42 am

The most recent film starring the American icon, the Harley Davidson motorcycle, was called ‘Wild Hogs’. Named after the nickname given to its riders in the 1970’s, this family comedy with an all star cast including John Travolta didn’t quite meet its hyped expectations. Falling flat in plot and more importantly, script, the movie was a disappointing attempt at capturing the lure of the Harley and the thrill of the open road. It should have been no surprise. Putting Disney together with Harley Davidson was a little like asking John Carpenter to do a remake of Bambi. ‘ Nice death scene, but it didn’t quite capture the mood of the original!’

Hollywood however, has had a love hate relationship with this most unlikely of stars for more than half a century. It unwittingly threw the spotlight on what had been an American standard of industry, only to demonize the name to the extent that The Harley Davidson Motor Company nearly went bankrupt. As with most relationships though, time heals all. It would be the elevation into cult status of the very same movies that nearly destroyed the company, that would raise the phoenix of Harley Davidson from the fire, and turn it into the iconic symbol that it is today.

As with the careers of most movie stars, early appearances and bit parts are mostly forgotten. You may catch a glimpse of a Harley in WWII movies. (The motorcycles were supplied to the army as utility transport during both World Wars until the Jeep took over as the main utility vehicle in 1942). The big break for the Harley Davidson came in 1953 when it was cast alongside, or should I say under, Marlon Brando in The Wild One. The movie, which told the story of Jonny, the bike gang rebel, reflected the tone of rebellion sweeping America at the time amongst the nations teenage youth.

Unlike today however, 1950’s society was not one driven by youth culture. The impact of the openly anti-establishment images that the genre portrayed did not spark a boom in sales for Harley Davidson as it would later achieve for such products as Ray-Ban sunglasses following the 1982 movie Top Gun. The effect in fact, was the opposite, leading the motorbike manufacturer into a period of declining sales. Conservative, middle America in the 50’s was not willing to support what Harley Davidson had become and the youth generation that idolised the films and their stars were not yet in charge of the finances to supplement their dreams.

Whilst commercially Harley Davidson was in trouble, its portrayal in movies continued to flourish. The notable peak in came in 1969 with the movie ‘Easy Rider’. Once again cast as the bad boys favourite mode of transportation, the Harley Davidson Chopper cruising the open highway, will always epitomize freedom and rebellion. Maybe it is this dichotomy of emotions, so fundamental to American history and the ‘American Dream’ that has been the backbone of the Harleys endurance.

The nineties saw Mickey Rourke and Don Jonson take up the gauntlet, although in this film it was Mickey Rourke’s character that bestowed the Name Harley Davidson to the title of the film. Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man once again cast the character of the rough neck to, yes you guessed it, Harley Davidson.

As the nineties progressed, the teenagers that had idolized Marlon Brando and those early biker movies in the 50’s were maturing into the wealth of America. Like an old friendship lost but never forgotten, it was these middle aged rebels of yester-year that would rekindle the corporate fortunes of Harley Davidson. they customized their bikes to stand out in a crowd and create for themselves a separate identity apart from the rest of the corporate clones. They were rebels that may have succumbed to the corporate ladder but now had the finances to relive the youth they could never afford.

So, it is with somewhat of a saddened heart, that the movie that was to portray the story of this revival and tell the story of those 50’s youth reborn, should have turn out to be such a damp squib. Maybe Harleys executives still feel the pinch of the bad boy image and this is why they turned to Disney to tell the story. Personally, I think they should have gone with Tarrentino, the guts and the glory, the true Harley Davidson.

How Does A Low Power Light Bulb Work - Light Fixtures From Edison to Present Day

Wednesday 12 March 2008 @ 4:47 am

Ask most people the question ‘Who invented the light bulbs?’ and you are likely to get the reply ‘Thomas Edison’. Whilst the question could be deemed to be a little ambiguous, you may get a tick or a cross depending on the questioners point of view.

It was Humphrey Davy, the English chemist who first attached wires to a battery and passed an electric current through a piece of carbon to create the first arc lamp back in 1809. The list of contributors between this humble beginning and Thomas Edisons’ filament light bulb in 1879 is quite a long one and any one of them could have the title bestowed on them.

Warren De la Rue in 1820 used platinum as the source of his arc. He did use an evacuated tube so this could be said to be the first attempt at a light bulb. The cost of the platinum however was too expensive to make this idea feasible for widespread use. In fact it was not until 1875 that Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans patented the first light bulb and it was this patent bought by Edison and modified that led to him creating a filament bulb that worked for 40 hours.

It was not long after the Edison light bulb that fluorescent lamps were created. In 1890, Peter Cooper Hewitt created the first lamps that used gas as opposed to a filament to pass electric current through to create illumination. It was not until 1973 that Ed Hammer and General Electric came up with the design for the compact fluorescent lamp, or light bulb as we know it today. At the time, it was deemed too expensive to set up production of the low wattage bulbs and the design plans were shelved. Later the design plans leaked out and were eventually copied by others.

The energy saving capacity of the low power light bulbs is due to their use of gas instead filament as the conduit for the electrical charge. Fluorescent lights in industrial settings such as factories and offices have benefited from these savings for years. The percentage of electrical usage in the average household in the United States amounts to 9% of the total usage by each household. The use of low power bulbs could reduce this by 7% to just 2%. Not only would this save on efficiency, the amount of reduced carbon emissions would have an extremely positive effect on global warming.

There are some negatives with low power light bulbs. They contain a very small amount of mercury which has an effect on disposal when they are used up. The environmental impact of breakages also poses a small hazard as broken bulbs release small amounts of mercury vapor. None of these are major problems and the benefits of this type of lighting far out way the risks.

Another set of lights that follow the same compact design are the metal halide lamps. Metal Halide lamps are part of the HID group of lamps or high intensity discharge family. Mainly used in industrial settings these lamps use a high pressure mixture of argon, mercury and different combinations of metal halides to create a variety of specialist lighting effects. Most commonly, the metal halide lamps were used in outdoor lighting settings, street lighting and parking lots. Their high intensity effect being best suited for pointed, directional lighting.

In conclusion, light fixtures have come a long way since the days of Davy and Edison and the future is destined to be one of changing technologies as we strive to become more efficient in our use of electrical power. The use in cartoons of a light bulb above the head to simulate the breaking of a new idea is ironic as we look to the future for ways to conserve our energy resources.
